The sutra reveals the profound benefits of using different materials for prayer beads, showing how each type amplifies the blessings of one’s practice:

• Iron beads – Fivefold increase in merit per recitation.

• Copper beads – Tenfold increase.

• Pearl or coral beads – Hundredfold increase.

• Bodhi or wood beads – Thousandfold increase.

• Lotus seed beads – Ten-thousandfold increase.

• Crystal or Indra beads – Millionfold or more in merit.

Among all, Bodhi seed beads are regarded as the most sacred, symbolising awakening and enlightenment. The sutra further teaches that even holding Bodhi beads — without recitation — brings immeasurable blessings, as their natural vibration resonates with the energy of enlightenment itself.

Traditionally, a full mala contains 108 beads, representing the purification of worldly desires and the completion of spiritual cycles. However, malas of 54, 27, or 14 beads may also be used, each maintaining the same essence in a refined form.
